Following a disappointing 3-9 season, Deion Sanders and the Colorado Buffaloes faced significant scrutiny. As they head into the new season, QB Juju Lewis’ recent comments have sparked more questions about last year’s problems, particularly the coaching.
During the Big 12 Media Day, Juju Lewis, now Colorado’s starting QB, revealed that he is now looking at opposing teams’ defenses as opposed to last year. This reportedly called into question the quality of coaching that the Buffs had last season, but Lewis’ comment did not stop new Colorado offensive coordinator and QB coach Brennan Marion from being positive about the new season.
“Love y’all excited for football season! Go Buffs!!!” he tweeted.
Marion has instigated a lot of changes for the Colorado offense for next season, and there is actually a lot of optimism regarding these changes. This comes after Colorado has undergone a staff overhaul with new offensive and defensive coordinators in Marion and Chris Marve, respectively.
Last season, Colorado averaged just 20.9 points per game, struggling on offense, with head coach Deion Sanders coming under fire for the team’s offensive woes. After several staff members left, he hired Marion to replace Pat Shurmur as offensive coordinator, essentially hitting the reset button on how the team should play.
With these changes, many analysts and pundits see it as a sign that Sanders is finally addressing some problems the Buffs had last year.
Deion Sanders Jr. Defends Former Colorado OC After Juju Lewis Comments
Juju Lewis’ comments led to a firestorm of criticism towards former Colorado offensive coordinator Pat Shurmur. However, the former Buffs OC found himself a defender in head coach Deion Sanders’ eldest son, Deion Sanders Jr., who took to X to defend the embattled coach.
“They know good & well what JuJu meant,” Deion Sanders Jr. tweeted. “You can hate the play calling, but Coach Shurmur taught coverages & etc .. Just let people hate. It’s summer time… money slow right now for everybody.”
Many found this defense a bit surprising, given that Sanders Jr. previously stated in October of last year that Shurmur was running Colorado’s offense, in an effort to defend his father against criticisms of the Buffs’ disappointing season.
