‘500K per Win Is Wild’ – John Mateer’s $3M NIL Deal Stirs Debate Among Oklahoma Fans

John Mateer Making Millions in NIL

According to insider Pete Nakos, Mateer’s current NIL deal is sitting around $3 million.

Fans all over social media have posted their thoughts about Mateer’s current deal at Oklahoma.

While some fans are thrilled for Mateer, others are skeptical of the deal, considering Mateer hasn’t exactly led any of his previous teams to championship-level games. But with his experience playing for the Washington State Cougars over the last couple of seasons, perhaps the Sooners believe that he could be the real deal.

Last season for the Cougars, Mateer threw for 3,139 yards, 29 touchdowns, and just seven interceptions. If he can put up similar numbers in Norman this year, teams might want to look out for the Sooners in 2025.

Oklahoma Is Looking To Bounce Back in 2025

Head coach Brent Venables needs to have a much better season this year. He has posted two losing seasons in his first three years, even though he did win 10 games back in 2023.

When Bob Stoops and Lincoln Riley were in charge, you had a feeling that the team was always going to be consistent and elite at the same time. Stoops was able to bring the school a national title 25 years ago, while Riley was able to take the school to multiple College Football Playoff appearances.

Now, it is up to Venables to sprinkle in some of the winning magic that he had as the defensive coordinator at Clemson for many years.

If he can’t do that, his days in Norman might be numbered for sure. With the addition of Mateer, the team now has an experienced quarterback who has played against plenty of power-five opponents in his career.

As long as Mateer can take care of the football and as long as Venables can keep his defense in line in big moments, the Sooners will be much better in the SEC this season.
