As Joey McGuire and Will Hammond are surely aware, the Brendan Sorsby storm has moved on to the NFL. With the tornado out the door, the Texas Tech Red Raiders will have no choice but to move forward at quarterback. Will Hammond is seemingly in the driver’s seat to fill in for Sorsby, but the choice will come down to the head coach.
According to a Pete Thamel post on X on July 7, McGuire addressed the future of the quarterback position in a statement to ESPN:
“Texas Tech coach Joey McGuire tells ESPN that Will Hammond could well end up as the Week 1 starter, which is earlier than his stated timeline from spring as Hammond recovers from a torn ACL. ‘I think he could be, I really do,’ McGuire said when asked if Hammond ends up starting,” he posted.
With Hammond building momentum in the Texas Tech building and Sorsby out the door, it appears the Red Raiders might be on the cusp of putting together a plan for the 2026 season. Of course, Hammond isn’t the only quarterback on the team’s roster with ambition.
Will Hammond’s Starting Competition Takes Shape
Joey McGuire walked up to the edge of giving his endorsement of the freshman quarterback, but he didn’t pull the trigger. As such, he has left room for another quarterback to blow him away. With two other young quarterbacks on the roster, any player could develop to a new level overnight.
In addition to Will Hammond, the team has Lloyd Jones III and Holden Phillips. Phillips has already spent a season with the Red Raiders, so he could be on the precipice of reaching a breakthrough moment. Jones could also break through at any moment after spending a year on the team.
Of course, with the rubber meeting the road and Hammond seemingly in the lead, Jones and Phillips will need the light to turn on immediately to make a comeback.
Mitch Griffis, a senior, is still on the roster. However, based on where the team is and Griffis’ history of limited production, he has perhaps the same risk as the other quarterbacks but the shortest amount of eligibility left, which may disqualify him before the competition begins.
Which young quarterback will lead the Red Raiders into the future?
