Joe Moorhead will enter his third year as head coach of the Akron Zips in 2024, looking to improve on his two previously disappointing seasons.
The renowned head coach is recognized for his offensive mind and took over at Akron in 2021, leaving a prominent coordinator position to pursue another head coaching opportunity.
What is Moorhead’s salary and contract for the upcoming season?
Joe Moorhead’s Salary and Contract in 2024
Moorhead had originally signed a five-year $2.5 million contract following the 2021 season, guaranteeing the Akron head coach $500,000 annually. But the established head coach was recently extended. It is reported that Moorhead will earn $620,000 in 2024 after lengthening his initial deal.
Moorhead signed a contract extension in February 2023 through to 2027, that bumped up his salary from a reported $500,000 in 2022. ESPN notes that “It also includes a retention bonus structure that puts his salary in the middle of the pack in the Mid-American Conference.”
The Akron head coach does have a bonus package in place, but those details are currently unavailable.
The extension was granted despite the Zips having consecutive 2-10 seasons. However, it was expected that Moorhead would be considered for several distinguished college football and NFL offensive coordinator openings.
While the exact details of Moorhead’s contract and bonuses are not made public, USA Today reported an increase in earnings in 2024.
Akron is Moorhead’s third stint as a head coach, having previously had stops at Fordham and Mississippi State.
However, his coaching experience stretches back to 1998 with various stops, including as offensive coordinator with the Oregon Ducks between 2020-2021.
Moorhead took a pay cut to become head coach of the Zips and was reportedly earning over $1 million in Eugene. His salary at Akron is also significantly less than he earned at Mississippi State, which was $3 million in 2019.
Moorhead’s Net Worth
While Moorhead’s net worth is not public, the Akron head coach has earned millions over his coaching career.
USAToday reports that Moorhead has earned $9.3 million in salaries since 2009, but his net worth will be considerably higher given his extensive coaching career.
Including his current salary, by the time the Akron head coach reaches the end of his contract in 2027, he will have gained salaries worth over $11 million since 2009.

However, Moorhead was reportedly given a $7 million buyout when he was fired as Mississippi State head coach, and his salary as head coach of Fordham (between 2012 and 2015) is undisclosed.
Additionally, this figure does not include any private bonus arrangement, academic incentives, or perks. It also doesn’t include salaries from coaching roles at Akron, Georgetown, and Pittsburgh earlier in his career.
