Joe Alt was one of the top offensive tackles in college football over his three-year stint with the Notre Dame Fighting Irish.
Alt saw the field early in his freshman season in South Bend before compiling career college stats that showcase the elite status of the Notre Dame offensive tackle. He played over 2,000 snaps as one of the most dominant tackles in program history.
Joe Alt Plays Early in Freshman Season
Alt committed to Notre Dame after playing offensive tackle and tight end at Totino-Grace High School in Minnesota. Recruited as a four-star prospect, the Irish offensive tackle with an athletic bloodline was a desirable recruit.
His father, John, was an offensive lineman with the Iowa Hawkeyes in the early 1980s. He was a first-round draft pick by the Kansas City Chiefs in 1984 and is in the Hall of Fame at Arrowhead. His brother, Mark, is a current NHL player who plays for the Los Angeles Kings.
Arriving with an elite pedigree, Alt got on the field early in South Bend, contributing as a tackle and tight end in his freshman season. He played in every game of his rookie campaign, starting the final eight games of the year at left tackle.
Alt showed his talent quickly and only allowed three sacks on 329 pass-blocking snaps. The premier offensive tackle also showcased his ability to create as a run blocker, including in the Fiesta Bowl against Oklahoma State, where the Irish had 551 yards of total offense.

Alt Doesn’t Allow a Sack As a Sophomore
A foundational figure on the Notre Dame offensive line, Alt started 13 games at left tackle in his sophomore season, establishing himself as one of the top offensive linemen in the nation in 2022.
As one of the country’s most productive and talented offensive tackles, Notre Dame used Alt to their advantage. The Irish’s offensive line was on the Joe Moore Award Midseason Honor Roll and helped power one of the top rushing offenses in the country, running for 2,457 yards in Alt’s sophomore season.
Alt played 406 pass-blocking snaps in 2022 without allowing a single sack and was named a first-team All-American.

Alt Becomes Established As One of the Best OTs in the Nation as a Junior
Alt entered the 2023 season as one of the best players in college football with expectations of becoming an early NFL Draft selection. Another reliable, consistent, and elite year followed, as the team captain played his part in one of the most productive offenses in Notre Dame history.
The Fighting Irish finished 10-3 on the season and averaged 39.1 points per game. The offensive line played a big part in Notre Dame’s success, earning Joe Moore Award attention and powering the team’s 5.3 yards per run and 9.13 receiving yards per attempt.
Alt featured in 12 games, playing 713 offensive snaps and allowing only one sack on 368 pass-blocking downs.

Voted a unanimous All-American, Alt won the 2023 Notre Dame Offensive Lineman of the Year and was a Lombardi Award and Outland Trophy finalist. Alt leaves Notre Dame after three incredibly successful years with the program, during which he allowed just four sacks.
