Kalen DeBoer’s first two seasons in Alabama have been a very different affair from the Nick Saban era. The program has been unable to win the SEC title, and its participation in the College Football Playoff in 2025 was disappointing.
Yet, this is nothing unexpected as the end of an era as momentous as Saban’s would be disruptive to any school. But it shouldn’t be so for Alabama, thinks Paul Finebaum, who this Tuesday attacked DeBoer’s first two seasons in charge of the Crimson Tide:
“Kalen DeBoer has just made a mess out of a great situation,” Finebaum said. “He’s lost eight games in two years.”
Fans didn’t take long to react to the comments by the sports journalist, chastising him for them:
“Paul trying to be relevant. Check Coach Saban’s record the first 2 years,”
In short, a great number of fans thought Finebaum was just trying to be controversial.
A small number of fans did agree with the journalist, even if reluctantly.
What was Nick Saban’s record in his first two seasons in charge of Alabama?
Nick Saban’s first two seasons in charge of Alabama weren’t without a hiccup either, with the 2007 season being particularly egregious, with a record of 2-6. The second season did have a marked improvement, with an overall record of 12-2, but it’s the particular games that were lost that took away from the perfect regular season the program had.
Alabama lost the SEC championship game against Urban Meyer’s Florida Gators and the Sugar Bowl to Kyle Whittingham’s Utah.
