Insider Claims NCAA Not Expected To Back Down As Brendan Sorsby Eligibility Saga Nears End

District court Judge Ken Curry in Lubbock County, Texas, ruled in favor of Texas Tech quarterback Brendan Sorsby this Monday in the case regarding his continued eligibility. This represents a legal setback for the NCAA, which was hoping the quarterback could be prevented from joining preseason activities with Texas Tech.

The ruling body of college athletics had previously banned Sorsby permanently from participating in college sports due to his participation in gambling activities. Here’s what the NCAA said in a statement regarding the judge’s decision:

“The NCAA strongly disagrees with the court’s ruling in Sorsby’s case and is deeply concerned about the damaging, far-reaching and broadly destabilizing ramifications of this outcome – which undermines and corrupts the integrity of sports. The NCAA is committed to supporting student-athlete mental health but must continue to aggressively defend against actions that defraud college athletics and threaten competitive integrity, such as betting on one’s own sport.”

The injunction prevents the NCAA from stopping Sorsby “from practicing, playing, or otherwise participating on Texas Tech’s football team for the 2026 football season.” According to reporter Ross Dellenger, it’s improbable that the NCAA will back down, and he expects the organization to appeal the injunction.

The NCAA maintains that Sorsby’s decision to place 40 bets on the Indiana Hoosiers, while a member of the program, is the cardinal sin of sports betting and thus compromises the integrity of the sport.

The judge ruled that Brendan Sorsby will have to serve a two-game suspension, a compromise penalty proposed by the player’s legal team and supported by Texas Tech University, missing the games against Abilene Christian and Oregon State.

Texas Tech booster Cody Campbell on Brendan Sorsby’s case

Texas Tech booster and Board of Regents chairman Cody Campbell released a statement of his own, via On3, regarding the Brendan Sorsby case. From his wording, he believes neither side is absolved of fault, but that this is a clear sign of a broken system that needs fixing. By his statement, it looks like he believes or at least hints at the need for the school to rein in the behavior of its players. At the same time, it’s an indictment of those running the system, in this case, the NCAA:

“This unfortunate situation is the outcome of a broken system,” Campbell said. “I’m doing everything I can to fix it, but until there is a permanent solution, Texas Tech and its student athletes have to do the best they can to navigate and compete amid the chaos that exists in the reality of the world we live in.”

Brendan Sorsby led the Texas Tech Red Raiders to their first-ever Big 12 title last season and their first-ever appearance in the College Football Playoff.
