Texas Tech booster Cody Campbell isn’t backing down from the growing criticism surrounding quarterback Brendan Sorsby’s controversial eligibility ruling.
Following the widespread backlash after a judge granted Sorsby a temporary injunction that allows him to play during the 2026 season despite an NCAA gambling ban, Campbell argued that Texas Tech is being unfairly targeted because of its growing prominence in the sport.
His comments, however, quickly sparked another wave of criticism from fans across social media.
Speaking with OutKick’s Dan Dakich, Campbell suggested the outrage surrounding Sorsby’s case has less to do with gambling and more to do with Texas Tech’s rise as a college football power.
“It’s because the college football world doesn’t believe Texas Tech should be as good as we are, we’ve been a disruptor, just like Indiana has. So we’re a target,” Campbell said.
“If this had happened at LSU, people would have said, ‘Ah, it’s LSU.’ But it happened at Texas Tech, and people don’t want to compete with us,” he added.
The remarks came as multiple athletic directors, including those from Georgia and Nebraska, voiced concerns about the ruling. Some schools have even discussed avoiding future scheduling agreements with Texas Tech in response to the situation.
Many fans were quick to reject Campbell’s argument.
“He’s delusional. Penn State did not have players who were guilty. It was the adults in charge who were the perpetrators,” one fan wrote.
Another user pointed directly to the gambling issue.
“Naaaah the dude gambled on sports. He shouldn’t be playing. Look at Pete Rose. Banned from baseball. He knew what he was doing. Problem or not… get him off the team and everyone plays them. Nobody is afraid of Tech.”
Others argued that addiction should not erase accountability.
“No, he broke a very clear and simple rule and law. It has nothing to do with what school it is. Any school allowing someone who should be banned from ever playing again to play is going to be boycotted.”
“Umm.. LSU did have a player caught betting. LSU did the RIGHT thing and suspended the player,” another user wrote.
Debate Around Brendan Sorsby Continues
The controversy surrounding Sorsby remains one of the biggest stories in college football. The Texas Tech quarterback reportedly placed thousands of wagers over several years, including bets involving Indiana while he was playing for the program.
While Texas Tech officials continue to defend their support of Sorsby and emphasize his gambling addiction struggles, many around the sport remain concerned about the integrity and NCAA enforcement.
For now, Campbell’s defense of Texas Tech has only added more fuel to the controversy.
