Tiger Woods Confers Akshay Bhatia With a Shocking Nickname During TGL’s Live Broadcast

Tiger Woods had fans laughing during Tuesday night’s TGL broadcast after giving Akshay Bhatia an unexpected nickname on live TV.
Woods appeared in a pregame interview with SportsCenter anchor Scott Van Pelt, before Jupiter Links faced New York Golf Club. The 15-time major winner, who is still recovering from a back injury and not playing yet, was asked how his team planned to bounce back after a poor start. Woods responded jokingly saying:
“Well, I don’t think we can play as bad as we did. There’s only one way to go, is up. We were Bad News Bears and we don’t want to be the Bad News Bears 2. No more sequels here,” Woods joked. “We’ve got Ashtray, er, Akshay as part of our team and he brings that youth, that excitement…”

Bhatia, a local Jupiter resident, is filling in for both Tom Kim and Woods this season. Tuesday’s match marked his first appearance for Jupiter Links in TGL.
At 23, Bhatia is already one of the young names to watch on the PGA Tour. He has two Tour wins and finished tied for third at last year’s Players Championship. Woods has been a longtime supporter of Bhatia, inviting him to the Hero World Challenge in each of the past two seasons.

Tiger Woods shares update on his injury recovery

Tiger Woods said he is making progress with his rehab, but admitted that it will still take time before he can think about returning to competitive golf. He has been sidelined since undergoing disc replacement surgery in October.

“I’m moving up to short irons, so that’s about it,” Woods said. “I’m progressing, which is nice. I’m getting there and getting stronger. It’s just one of those things where it just takes so much time for the bone to heal and the bone to set.”

He also joked about what he might be capable of right now, saying he could probably manage just one hole on the TGL course.

“At my speed right now, I could probably play TGL’s Stinger hole,” Woods said. “Just kind of roll it off the tee.”

The Stinger is a 414-yard par-4 inspired by the low, controlled shot Woods became famous for, with a rock formation in front of the tee box that forces players to keep the ball down.

Woods turned 50 in December and was cleared to chip and putt in late November. When he spoke about his recovery earlier that month, he said he was unsure about how much he would be able to play this season.

“Hopefully, I will be able to maybe play the end of the season here and there, but I don’t know,” he said.

He has not played in an official PGA Tour event since missing the cut at The Open Championship in July 2024. While he is now eligible for the PGA Tour Champions, Woods has not said whether he plans to play on the senior circuit.
