The Texas Children’s Houston Open is all set to begin this week at Memorial Golf Course, with 135 golfers competing for a $9.9 million prize fund. Every season, the tournament generates a lot of excitement because it is so close to the first golf major of every season, the Masters. Golfers who compete in the event typically use the tournament to tune their skills before their big campaign at Augusta National.

Interestingly, from 2007 to 2018, the Texas Children’s Houston Open even served as the final qualifying competition for golfers to compete in the Masters that year. After the Memorial Golf Course underwent major renovations in 2020, it became a warm-up tournament. The course is one of the most historically significant, and it is known for enormous renovations over time.

The Memorial Park was first built in 1912, but it only had 9 holes; later, in 1936, a full 18-hole championship course was built and opened for public play. Later in 2019, the Astros Golf Foundation funded and completed a $30 million renovation of the golf course. Architect Tom Doak modified a lot of things in this course, and it was also reported that Brooks Koepka was also involved in it.

In 2019, the majority of the trees on the course were removed, and the number of bunkers was reduced to as few as 20. The Memorial Golf Course was designed with fast greens, making it a precision course rather than a power one. Furthermore, a drainage system and sand-capped fairways were installed to ensure that the PGA tournament could continue even in the event of adverse weather conditions.

The Texas Children’s Houston Open has a chequered history at the Memorial Golf Course. The PGA Tour introduced the tournament in 1946, although the event was held at River Oaks Country Club. Memorial Park held the event for a few seasons in 1947 and 1951-63 before changing venues many times between the 1960s and 2020. Following the 2019 refurbishment, the tournament returned to the Memorial in 2020 and has been held there exclusively since then.

The Memorial Golf Course is a par 70 course that covers about 7,400 yards. The course’s 18 holes are recognized for their wide fairways, yet they are nevertheless challenging to approach due to the precision-demanding fairways. Interestingly, this golf course also follows the risk-reward principle, and with precision, the course can be rather beneficial to golfers as well.

Many well-known names have won the Texas Children’s Houston Open at Memorial Golf Course, with Min Woo Lee being the most recent winner. Lee ended his campaign on the course with a total score of 20 under par, just one shot ahead of the field. This was also his first PGA Tour victory, so he demonstrated and fulfilled his tremendous underdog story at the Memorial Golf Course itself.

Another notable fact about Memorial is that it holds many local competitions, with over 60,000 rounds played on the course each year.
