Phil Mickelson has often been active on X, and recently, he commented on one of the more saddest posts for the football world. Skip Houltz, the son of legendary coach Lou Holtz, revealed in an X post that his father passed away while resting at home. Houltz has dedicated nearly 35 years of his life to coaching in College Football History, with his most famous effort coming during the 1988 National Championship.

At the time, Lou Holtz was a part of the Notre Dame Fighting Irish Football team, and he guided the team to a 12-0 victory in the tournament. Phil Mickelson expressed his condolences to the family in Skip Hoults’ comments section for their tragic loss. The golfer also mentioned one of Houltz’s most memorable speeches to him and his squad during the 2008 Ryder Cup, claiming that it still has an impact on him today.

    Mickelson’s X post read,

“I’m so sorry for your loss. His speech to Team USA at the 2008 Ryder cup was the best I’ve ever heard and still impacts me today. I’m so appreciative for the small amount time we shared and I know you feel grateful to have had so much with him. It still hurts though and I’m so sorry. 😔”

Interestingly, the 2008 Ryder Cup was a significant tournament for Team USA, as they were looking to break Team Europe’s three-time winning streak. Mickelson and his team eventually won by a comfortable margin, with a total score of 16.5-11.5.

Talking about the 2026 season, Phil Mickelson has yet to play his first competitive event.

Will Phil Mickelson be a part of the LIV Golf Hong Kong?

Following a tremendous tournament in Adelaide, LIV Golf will be making their next stop at Hong Kong Golf Club, one of Asia’s historic golf courses. While there is a lot of excitement surrounding the event, fans are still unsure whether Phil Mickelson will compete or not. The golfer initially claimed that he would miss the first two LIV tournaments due to a family problem and that he would be in Hong Kong.

Unfortunately, it appears that Mickelson’s family health issues have kept him at home, since LIV Golf has announced that Australian golfer Wade Ormsby will compete in the LIV Golf Hong Kong. The Hyflyers team revealed this in a statement, which read,

“We are excited to have Wade join the team again in Hong Kong as he steps in for Phil. As a two-time winner of The Hong Kong Open, Wade brings a great deal of familiarity to Hong Kong Golf Club.”

LIV’s next stop after Hong Kong will be Johannesburg, where they will host their first African tournament. There is speculation that Phil Mickelson may make a comeback in that tournament, but nothing is confirmed.
