Tiger Woods being compared to modern-day greats such as Scottie Scheffler and Rory McIlroy is not a new conversation. Pat Perez recently also talked about this comparison on the Subpar podcast, emphasizing his observations regarding the three golfers. Perez first praised Woods’ skill, noting that he is one of the most talented players to ever walk on a golf course, but McIlroy is very near this talent.

The experienced golfer noted that, while McIlroy has game potential, he has yet to reach Tiger Woods’ level of dominance. He explained that Woods’ dominance can be observed solely in Scottie Scheffler, who has held the world number one ranking since May 2022. Perez commended the golfer, saying he just focuses on his game and family, which is fantastic. According to an X post from the Subpar podcast, Perez stated:

I just didn’t think it would come because I still think that Rory is the closest I’ve seen talent wise to Tiger. You know, I don’t think anybody’s ever going to get to 80, you know, 82 wins on stuff again. But this guy, this guy’s [Scottie] different. I mean, I don’t know what it is. And I love the way he goes about his business. Just golf. Go home. Family. There’s no flash. There’s no nothing. He just literally does what he does and he goes home.”

Scottie Scheffler currently holds the World Rank 1 with 680 points on the leaderboard, while McIlroy has 403 points. Both of them had an outstanding 2025 season, and Scheffler even opened his 2026 season with a victory in the 2026 American Express. Scheffler is now competing in the WM Phoenix Open, and he discussed the course details during a press conference.

After two rounds at the 2025 WM Phoenix Open, Scottie Scheffler explained how TPC Scottdale provides numerous possibilities for birdies, particularly in the back nine holes. He asserted that one should be confident from the first hole and that if they stay focused, they may achieve a respectable score on the course. According to Asap Sports, he explained:

“Yeah, it’s a golf course where when you’re in play, hitting a lot of fairways, you can get some momentum going, and you can make a lot of birdies in a row, especially on the back nine. Once you start getting got it can feel just as challenging, especially this year with the rough being higher and the greens starting to firm up. I think it’s shaping up to be a really good weekend, and I’m glad to be having a tee time.”

Scheffler is in a tight spot after 36 holes, tied for 30th place with a total score of 5 under par and 6 strokes behind the leader.
