LIV Golf has increased the relegation spots amidst the decision to receive the Official World Golf Ranking points. The Saudi league has reapplied for the OWGR points, and with that, they have made certain changes in the league ahead of the start of the new season.

They have already changed the format of the circuit from a 54-hole stroke format to a 72-hole stroke format. Now, they have made another change. On Wednesday, it was announced that LIV Golf has increased the relegation spots from 6 to 11.

Until last season, the players finishing outside the top 48th place were relegated from the circuit, which has changed to 47th place. LIV Golf CEO Scott O’Neil has opened up about the change.

“Our continued mission is to build a league that grows the game of golf competitively, commercially and culturally. The changes we’re introducing for 2026 are about rewarding consistency, strengthening team golf, and creating clearer pathways for players to earn their place and progress within the League,” O’Neil said.

“Moving to 72 holes, expanding the field, increasing relegation, updated our points system and enhancing our investment in teams all reflect the same principle: if you perform week-in and week-out, individually and as part of a team, the performance matters. We believe this evolution makes LIV Golf more competitive, more transparent, and ultimately, more exciting for players, teams and fans around the world.”

Notably, LIV Golf has also increased the number of spots in the Lock Zone from the top 24 to the top 34. The next LIV Golf season is scheduled to start next month in Riyadh.

LIV Golf Plans To Sell Minority Stakes in Teams

LIV Golf has been making changes in the league ahead of the start of the 2026 season. Per reports from Bloomberg News, the series is looking forward to selling its minority stakes in the teams and seeking $300 million in valuation.

The league has hired Citigroup to look after the process. Nuclr Golf shared the news on its X (formerly Twitter) account with a caption:

“#JUST IN — The LIV Golf League is looking to sell minority stakes in multiple teams and is seeking $300M valuations. They have hired Citigroup for the process, per @business”

Notably, the Saudi league has also rebranded its teams. They made changes to the Majesticks GC and rebranded a new Korean GC. Moreover, the league has also signed a deal with Byeong Hun An ahead of the new season.

However, some players, including Brooks Koepka and Patrick Reed, have left the circuit to rejoin the PGA Tour.
