The PGA Tour’s announcement that Michael Brennan had been disqualified from the 2026 Farmers Insurance Open came as a huge surprise. The circuit reported that Brennan was found to be utilizing non-permitted green-reading tools following his opening round of 70, which was two under par. Following this, the golfer made a much-needed statement on his Instagram account on January 31.
In his Instagram post, Brennan revealed his involvement with a new course data analyst, who provided him with a green reading tool to track his course success. He hoped that this would help his game, but after the round, he discovered that these types of tools are not permitted on the PGA Tour. Brennan informed the PGA Tour Rules Official about this and was disqualified, despite his strong start in the event.
NUCLR Golf reported about this Instagram post on their X page with a post that read,
“🚨🏹❌ #NEW — Michael Brennan details the reason for his DQ at the Farmers Insurance Open. Brennan says he violated the rules and informed the Tour after he sketched a few arrows in his yardage book from a diagram his course data analyst sent him.”
Interestingly, in the comments section of this post, fans began to support Michael Brennan, stating that the rule is unfair and that the golfer should have been given a chance. Fans also praised Brennan’s honesty and how, after learning the regulations, he self-reported, making him a role model. Talking more about these fans’ comments, here’s a look at some of them:
“Lesson for society at large. Actions=consequences. Michael Brennan is a man of high character. He’s a role model.” One fan claimed.
“Rules are rules, but some rules in golf should be reconsidered.” One fan stated.
“This is getting a little ridiculous isn’t it,” another fan pointed out.
“Self reporting. On purpose. Not cheating; accountability. Another reason golf is the Best Sport.” One fan explained.
“Minor mistake and clearly wasn’t intentional since he reported himself. No harm no foul, good on him to keep integrity of the game. Some other sports athletes could learn from this.” Another fan claimed.
Aside from that, Michael Brennan also claimed in an Instagram post that this was a very difficult lesson for him.
Has Michael Brennan ever won on the PGA Tour?

Michael Brennan went professional in 2024, and he has not participated in many PGA Tour tournaments since then. Despite this, the golfer did not participate in any tournaments during his first professional year. Brennan competed in his first major competition in 2025, and he won decisively. The tournament here is the Bank of Utah Championship, which was held at Black Desert Resort Golf Course last season.
Brennan was the tournament’s standout player, winning by a large margin. The golfer shot 67, 65, 64, and 66 for a total score of 22 under par. This was an incredible performance by him, and as the tournament winner, he received a stunning $1,080,000. Unfortunately, since this win, the golfer has not been able to shoot a good score and has failed to make the top ten.
