Danielle Kang has slammed the LPGA Tour for shortening the HGV Tournament of Champions to 54 holes. The golfing star cited that while the PGA Tour considered it a last option during challenging weather conditions, for the LPGA it seemed the first choice.
On Sunday, February 1, the final round of the HGV Tournament of Champions was halted due to unplayable weather conditions. As a result, the tournament was cut short to 54 holes and Nelly Korda was declared the winner.
However, Danielle Kang wasn’t happy with the decision and shared her dissent on Instagram.
“So what’s our take on LPGA cancelling events to 54 holes? I’m sure there are valid reasons to an extent but in comparison, the PGA, while it seems to be their LAST resort, it seems to be LPGA’s FIRST option. Thoughts? No shade just genuinely curious on other people’s thoughts,” she wrote.
For the uninitiated, the HGV Tournament of Champions is the second event in the last few months to get cut short to 54 holes. A couple of months ago, the Toto Japan Classic was also shortened to just three rounds due to the weather.
Earlier, Nelly Korda fired an 8-under 64 on Day 3 at Lake Nona amid the challenging conditions to take the 54-hole lead and eventually emerged as the champion of the LPGA season opener. This was her sixteenth win on the LPGA Tour and her first since The Annika in 2024.
