Brooks Koepka’s return to the PGA Tour was met with loud support from fans at Torrey Pines, with the five-time major champion admitting the reception meant a lot to him as he begins this new chapter.
After spending more than three years competing on LIV Golf Koepka teed it up again on Tour at the Farmers Insurance Open and was welcomed with cheers throughout his opening round in Southern California.
Speaking after Thursday’s round Koepka opened up about how the crowd made him feel.
“Yeah, it was great. Yeah, the fans were awesome today. I think it was very cool to hear ‘welcome back.’ It was pretty much every hole, which is great. I loved to hear it and I’m excited for the next few days,” he said.
While the support was strong, Koepka’s scorecard was a mixed one. He started steadily with a string of pars before dropping a shot at the fourth hole. After settling in with eight straight pars he picked up another bogey at the par five 13th. He managed to close his round with a birdie on the 18th finishing at one over par for the day.
The score left him well down the leaderboard which means he will need a strong showing in Friday’s round to stay in the tournament and make the cut.
