PGA Tour veteran Rory McIlroy has been one of LIV Golf’s harshest and most vocal critics. Despite sharing several opinions against the PIF-backed league and its golfers, McIlroy presented a different side of himself when he mentioned that he was okay with Brooks Koepka and other LIV Golfers returning to the PGA Tour without consequences.
While McIlroy’s statement was welcomed by many fans and critics, Golf Channel’s veteran analyst Brandel Chamblee disagreed with the Northern Irishman. During an episode of The Favorite Chamblee Podcast, Chamblee not only disagreed with Rory McIlroy but also mentioned what would happen if Brooks Koepka were allowed to return without consequences.
Chamblee said:
“So I couldn’t disagree more with what Rory said… “I couldn’t disagree more with those who think that Brooks should be able to come back without some consequence… It’s great if he does want to come back. I think that’s good. It’s the best legitimate tour in the world. But he was a key legitimiser of LIV. He wasn’t just an innocent bystander.”
He further added:
“To allow Brooks to come back with no consequence would undermine the meritocratic foundations that are the one thing that makes the PGA Tour legitimate.”
Brandel Chamblee concluded by saying that Koepka must face consequences not as retribution, but because the PGA Tour needs to set a precedent. Chamblee concluded by saying that if the Tour allows Koepka to return without consequences, they would be sending a message that rules do not apply to the expendable and not to the exceptional.
Brandel Chamblee had earlier criticized Rory McIlroy for his behavior at the US Open
At the 2025 US Open, Rory McIlroy found himself in controversy when he decided to skip talking to the media. While many still gave McIlroy a free pass, the 5-time Major winner found himself in a lot more controversy when he defended his actions by saying he has earned the right to do whatever he wants to.
This statement by McIlroy did not sit well with Brandel Chamblee. During an appearance on Sky Sports Golf Podcast, Chamblee mentioned that no one has earned the right do what they desire. However, Chamblee also added that McIlroy has been too important to golf, and hence, the bridge with him must not be burned.
Chamblee said (1:02:01 onwards):
“Nobody earns the right to do whatever they want, Eisenhower didn’t earn the right to do whatever he wanted. Churchill didn’t earn the right to do whatever he wanted. He’d like to have those comments back. But he’s earned the right to get some grace for sure. “Let’s not burn that bridge with Rory. He’s been too important to golf… let him sort things out and come back and start being the Rory that we all know and love.”
It must be noted that while Brandel Chamblee criticized Rory McIlroy for his statement, the golf analyst in a X post from last year mentioned that McIlroy has been the best with the media over the last 15 years. At the time, Chamblee said that McIlroy’s efficiency in handling the media is what made his silence or ignorance puzzling.
