2x Ryder Cup winner withdraws from ongoing American Express due to illness

Ludvig Åberg has withdrawn from the American Express due to illness, pulling out shortly before his third-round tee time on Saturday.

The two-time Ryder Cup winner was set to play PGA West’s Stadium Course but made the decision around half an hour before heading to the tee. Åberg stood at 9 under par after rounds of 68 and 67 and was safely inside the cut line at the time.

His withdrawal continues a familiar pattern. Around the same time last season Åberg fell ill during the Farmers Insurance Open later withdrawing from the AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am, before returning to competition weeks later.

This week’s exit came during his first PGA Tour start of the season and his first appearance since the Tour Championship last August. Åberg entered 2026 after a solid 2025 campaign that included multiple top-10 finishes and another Ryder Cup selection for Team Europe.

Luke Clanton and Rico Hoey also withdrew from the American Express earlier in the week both citing illness.

What’s at stake at the 2026 American Express

There is more on the line this week at the American Express than just a win. The tournament uses a 54 hole cut with the top 65 players and ties moving on after three rounds. This year the cut line settled at 8 under par. Everyone who made it through will play the final round at the Stadium Course.
The total purse this week is $9.2 million. The winner will take home $1.656 million. The event also counts toward the Aon Swing 5. FedEx Cup points earned here will help decide the five players who qualify for the AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am after the WM Phoenix Open.
