Insider Details Floyd Mayweather Jr.’s Role in Michigan’s Recruitment of Five-Star Prospect

Floyd Mayweather Jr. is reportedly helping Kyle Whittingham and the Michigan Wolverines to recruit a five-star cornerback. Arguably one of the greatest boxers of all time, Mayweather apparently talked to the prospect recently.

Insider Brice Marich reported that the Wolverines are trying to land a commitment from CB Joshua Dobson. He was on his official visit to the program this weekend, and Michigan did everything it could to convince him.

As per Marich, the Wolverines gave Dobson the “blue carpet” treatment during his official visit. The highly-rated prospect got to talk to several prominent figures related to the Michigan program, and one of them was reportedly Mayweather.

“Come to Michigan, so I can watch you play,” he told Dobson, as per Marich.

Mayweather was born in Michigan and has deep ties to the school. Over the years, he has supported the Wolverines, and now he is seemingly taking on a new role to help out the program that’s close to his heart.

Even though Dobson hasn’t announced his commitment yet, his trip can be deemed successful for now. The star cornerback was happy with what he saw and the conversations he had with the Michigan staff.

“Man, it’s something special they are building, and they want me to be a part of it,” he told Rivals’ Steve Wiltfong after the visit.

It will be a huge win for the program if it manages to land Dobson ahead of the 2026 season. Whittingham has done a good job so far with recruitment and stabilizing the program.

With someone as revered as Mayweather stepping in to help the Wolverines, they will likely be successful in this recruitment attempt.

Kyle Whittingham Has a Huge Task Ahead of Him

Whittingham is one of the most experienced coaches in college football today. His first head coaching stint began with the Utah Utes in 2005, and he remained in that role until 2025.

Known for building a culture and long-term commitments, Whittingham was exactly what the Wolverines needed after the Sherrone Moore saga. He officially joined the program in December 2025 on a five-year contract.

He has done a commendable job so far with the new commitments and giving a new identity to the program. His real challenge will start when the next season rolls out, as the Wolverines have not made the playoffs since 2023.
