It was a disappointing moment for fans of the United States Men’s National team as they were beaten 4-1 by Belgium in the round of 16 at the FIFA World Cup 2026, and amid all the sorrow, Dave Portnoy decided to step in with his own rant about the World Cup exit.
In a huge rant on social media platform X, Portnoy lamented the defeat, blaming the players for not being good enough, and even asked for a soccer draft to be instated if this is how bad the team is going to be.
“Embarrassing effort from the United States. Lights were way too bright for US soccer team. Stage way too big. If we’re gonna keep creating international incidents over soccer it may be time to institute a soccer draft #usmt #soccer #usa,” Portnoy wrote on X alongside a rant video speaking in detail about things that contributed to the defeat of the Americans.
USA were pegged back early thanks to a goal from Belgium’s Charles De Ketelaere, and despite an equalizer from Malik Tilman, the Americans went behind again with De Ketelaere’s second goal, before strikes from Hans Vanaken and Romelu Lukaku completed their misery, knocking them out of the World Cup on their home turf.
USMNT Already in the News for Controversial Reasons
Belgium’s game against the USA was already full of controversy after Donald Trump’s alleged involvement in having forward Folarin Balogun’s red card suspended before the game.
While Trump denied pulling rank to have the red card suspended, FIFA did decide to allow Balogun to play the game despite him facing a one-game suspension after a sending off in USA’s previous game against Bosnia and Herzegovina.
As it turned out, Balogun’s presence did not do much to stop the onslaught in Seattle, with Belgium now progressing to face Spain in the World Cup quarterfinals.
