The Detroit News reports that there are terms in Creighton’s contract that specify that if Eastern Michigan makes a bowl game, then his contract will automatically be extended by a further year, essentially giving him a rolling contract with no fixed end date for as long as he delivers success to the program.
Since 2021, Eastern Michigan has made bowl games in three consecutive years, including a win over the San Jose Spartans in the Famous Idaho Potato in 2022.
In addition to his base salary, Creighton has several means of boosting his earning potential. Firstly, he earns a retention bonus of $25,000 annually and a $35,000 payout for media appearances.
Creighton also has a litany of bonuses built into his current contract to help bolster his salary. Those performance-related incentives include:
- $25,000 for every year Eastern Michigan reaches a bowl game, with an additional $25,000 if they win.
- Creighton’s retention bonus increases by $10,000 if the Eagles qualify for a bowl game. Additionally, it will rise by $25,000 for winning a bowl game and $50,000 for winning the MAC Championship.
- Creighton also gets a $25,000 standalone bonus for winning the MAC West Division and $30,000 if the Eagles are crowned MAC champions.
- If Eastern Michigan wins at least seven games in a single season, Creighton earns a $10,000 salary bonus.
- If Creighton wins MAC Coach of the Year, he earns a $25,000 bonus.
- If Eastern Michigan beats a Power Five team, Creighton receives a $15,000 bonus. Meanwhile, his assistants get a share of a separate $25,000 payment.
Creighton was named Eastern Michigan head coach in December 2013, and his salary has increased substantially from the reported $425,000 he earned in the first year of his tenure.
