Has Carson Towt Played Football in His Career? Know More About Ex-Notre Dame Forward As He Joins Indianapolis Colts

The Indianapolis Colts are taking a chance on college basketball forward Carson Towt by signing him to a contract.

It’s been reported that the Colts are signing Towt, an undrafted free agent, to play tight end for the organization. This is the second such college basketball-to-NFL project the Colts have taken on, doing the same with Mo Alie-Cox, who played collegiate basketball for VCU.

Towt, who played in his final game for Notre Dame last week in the ACC tournament, led the team in rebounding, averaging nine per game. The six-foot-eight, 250-pounder also played at Northern Arizona from 2020 to 2024, which included a single-season record of 423 rebounds in his final season with the club.

To make things even more interesting, Towt has never played football at either the high school or collegiate level. However, he believes he’s capable of making the transition due to “just an awareness of my physical gifts that were showcased on the basketball floor… I think this sport honors those things and my frame, how I developed as a player, kind of my play style, and what I pride myself on.”

The 2024-2025 Big Sky All-Defensive Team selection will try to help the Colts compete in the AFC South.

Can Carson Towt Replicate Mo Alie-Cox’s Success With The Colts?

As mentioned, the Colts have had success with a similar transition with Mo Alie-Cox. Cox was a standout for the VCU Rams at power forward for four years. He was a big reason why the Rams won their first-ever Atlantic 10 Conference championship and is the school’s all-time leader in field goal percentage.

He was soon signed by the Colts after wrapping up his collegiate career. At the time, he had not played any organized football since his freshman year in high school. Cox has since remained a staple in the Colts offense as the team’s backup tight end. He has played 17 games in each of his last five seasons, becoming a reliable producer for the offense.

With Towt, if the Colts can replicate even close to the success that Cox has seen, they’ll have one of the most talented tight end corps in the entire league, fronted by 2025 first-round draft selection Tyler Warren.

Warren comes off an extremely successful rookie campaign, hauling in 76 receptions for 817 yards and four touchdowns, clearly establishing himself as the Colts’ top option at the position. With Cox and now Towt behind him, Indy has no shortage of vertical threats over the middle at the position.
