Cal Scores Big with Brent Austin After Beating Out SEC Interest

With the NFL Draft out of the way, college football has turned it’s attention back towards the transfer portal as teams ramp up towards preseason. One of the most sought after defensive players was Austin from USF.

The 5″11 corner registered 48 tackles, led the team with 10 passes broken up, and two interceptions in 2024. Austin had visited Miami and Tennessee, but has now committed to Cal per On3 Sports.

The California native attended Cajon High School before going to the eastern side of the country, having committed to James Madison University. After two seasons in Virginia, he transferred to USF and played regularly for the Bulls in his Junior year.

He was part of a stacked JMU secondary in the 2023 season alongside D’Angelo Ponds, now with Indiana, and Chauncey Logan, now with Memphis.

Austin heads home after starting all 13 games for a USF team that finished the season 6-6 and 6th in the American Athletic Conference.

He joins up with a Cal team that had their moments in 2024, finishing with a 6-7 record and 14th in the ACC. Going 2-6 in inter-conference play was also less than ideal for head coach Justin Wilcox, who will be looking to get the team their first winning season since 2019.

Highlights of the season included wins over Auburn and Stanford, whilst a one-point loss to eighth-ranked Miami shows the team can compete with the best of them. Quarterback Fernando Mendoza threw for over 3,000 yards but has transferred to the Indiana Hoosiers for his Junior year.

A tough 2025 season lies ahead for Cal, but it is one that they are more than capable of ending with a positive record. Duke and SMU are the top teams that will visit the California Memorial Stadium.  Trips to Boston College and Louisville will provide stern tests for Wilcox and his team.

It is obvious that Austin’s return to California was a big factor in his decision to commit to the Golden Bears. Tennessee and Miami are both strong with CFB, so Cal must have impressed Austin to bring his talents back to the West Coast.
