Yankees manager Aaron Boone is well recognized for supporting his players and rarely discussing their slumps, even during difficult periods. SS Anthony Volpe exemplifies this approach; despite numerous criticisms from the baseball community, Boone consistently supports the Manhattan native, trusting he will recover from his slump.
Recently, MLB analyst Nick Kostos discussed Boone’s reluctance to criticize players for their shortcomings, noting that defending a player every time will never allow that player to step out of their comfort zone, which is essential in the big leagues. Kostos’ comments came during the latest episode of the You Better You Bet show.
“Aaron Boone, he’s apparently the nicest guy in the world, so I’m not saying he’s a bad guy at all. But he’s one of these guys that defends everything. Everything. Guy has a terrible slump. Oh, like, we’re just waiting on Judgey to get the bat off his shoulder. Judge is not going to be mired in a slump like that. But Anthony Volpe will go out there and kick the ball like he’s Leo Messi in the World Cup Final,” Kostos said.
“Aaron Boone will be like, yeah, he’s just working it out. He’s going to be fine. Hey, Aaron, listen, buddy, we all watch sports. We all know what’s right and what’s not right. You can say sometimes that the decision that your player made was not right. You can criticize somebody. You don’t have to defend everything under the sun,” he added.

Yankees Urged to Offload Anthony Volpe Ahead of Trade Deadline
According to the latest proposal from Pinstripes Nation, which builds on the trade route proposed by The Athletic, the Bronx Bombers should look to offload Volpe to their AL East rivals, the Rays, who, according to the latter, would be a good fit for the struggling shortstop.
Furthermore, the report suggested that any Volpe trade with the Rays could involve three players moving to the other side, with one necessarily being a pitcher.
While the suggested trade is hypothetical, it remains unclear whether the Bombers will be willing to trade the SS, whom they once touted as a long-term replacement at the position, a role immortalized by five-time World Series champion Derek Jeter.
So far this season, Volpe has a .247 batting average, one home run, 15 RBIs, and a .663 OPS. He missed a major chunk of the first half of the campaign while recovering from surgery he had in October last year.
