Yoshinobu Yamamoto and Shohei Ohtani shared a lively moment with President Donald Trump on Thursday as the Dodgers, the reigning World Series champions, visited the White House for the second consecutive year.
While praising Yamamoto, who was named World Series MVP, Trump turned around and asked, “Where is he?” in anticipation of greeting the pitcher, who was standing just beside Ohtani.
Trump then asked, “Who’s the better pitcher?” bringing smiles to the faces of the Japanese teammates. Manager Dave Roberts also burst out laughing.
Before meeting Trump, the Dodgers secured back-to-back series wins over the Yankees and Phillies, launching their second half on a high note.
Dodgers Presented President Donald Trump With a Jersey and a Championship Ring
The back-to-back World Series champions presented the POTUS with a personalized Dodgers World Series jersey bearing his name and No. 47 on the back, along with a championship ring. Upon receiving the ring, Trump joked, “Do I have to report this? I don’t want to report this.”
In his opening address welcoming the ballclub, Trump said he hoped to see the Dodgers back at the White House next year.
“For the first time in the proud history of this famous franchise, you are repeat champions. I’m thrilled to say welcome back to the White House. And maybe I’ll see you again next year, I hope,” Trump said.
The Dodgers will now head to Queens to face the Mets in the final stretch of their nine-game road series, then return home to begin a six-game homestand against the Mariners and the Red Sox.
