New York Yankees infielder Jose Caballero has sparked intrigue among fans after wiping his Instagram account and sharing a cryptic message on his Instagram Story. This comes after MLB’s recent judgment on his controversial pitch-clock routine.
After deleting all posts from his Instagram account, the Yankees shortstop shared a lengthy message in Spanish on his Instagram Story on Thursday, in which he sarcastically criticizes MLB’s handling of the pitch-clock situation.
“It’s very easy to just make up rules and change the most beautiful sport in the world and then not take responsibility for the failures of it,” Caballero wrote (translated to English).
“They know they’re wrong but it’s very difficult to accept that a simple player who just wants to play what I always love can adapt and use it in his game. In the end, they are the ones who command and do and undo when and how they want and the rest just have to shut up and obey.”
Caballero’s issue stems from a recent automated strike call handed to him despite him looking up by nine seconds in the pitch-clock timer. The rule requires batters to do so with at least eight seconds remaining.
MLB Revises Pitch Clock Violation Rules After Jose Caballero Incident
During the Yankees series against the Pittsburgh Pirates, Jose Caballero left reliever Dennis Santana frustrated. The shortstop was taking too much time to be ready at the plate, waiting until the final seconds to be ready, leading to a potential pitch clock violation for the pitcher.
Santana was unhappy and it prompted a benches-clearing incident. The play led MLB to revise its pitch-clock violation rules while asking the umpire to more strictly enforce the batter-readiness rule.
In Wednesday’s game against the Pirates, Caballero was handed an automatic strike call in the sixth inning under the revised interpretation.
On the other hand, Yankees manager Aaron Boone was not happy about this revised interpretation because of a lack of communication from the officials.
“I’ve been told very specifically over and over when we have had issues, when I’ve had my conversations with the league — [Caballero] has to be alert at eight seconds,” Boone said. “That’s making sure Cabby looks up at nine [seconds], just make sure he’s in. That’s very specifically what I’ve been told. And today was something different. And they didn’t give us the heads up.”
Meanwhile, second-base umpire Adrian Johnson and home plate umpire Quinn Wolcott explained the shift in rule largely prompted by Caballero’s antics at the plate.
“From our vantage point, Caballero circumvented the pitch-clock rules. It’s been an issue before,” Johnson said. “He’s been warned about it. He circumvented the rule, and we enforced the rule and gave him a violation.”
“It’s talking about when he gets in the [batter’s box], he’s not allowed an inordinate amount of time looking down, trying to get the pitcher to cause a violation,” Wolcott said. “… Obviously, it’s caused a lot of problems in the past. It’s not going to be allowed anymore.”
It appears the Yankees star was not happy, and therefore posted the Instagram story above.
