West Virginia head coach Steve Sabins shared an emotional moment with his children after the Mountaineers suffered a 12-7 loss to the North Carolina Tar Heels in the Men’s College World Series semifinal on Wednesday.
Sabins’ two kids, daughter Charlie and son Tucker, were present at the stadium. Shortly after the game, Sabins leaned into the spectator seats and asked for his two kids to join him.
He kissed both of them on the forehead and walked off into the dugout, where he continued comforting them in a heartwarming moment.
UNC’s Owen Hull delivered one of the best performances of the College World Series, going 4-for-5 with two doubles, a triple and a single, and three runs scored.
With the win, the Tar Heels reached their first MCWS championship series since 2007. On the other end, the loss brought the curtain down on one of West Virginia’s greatest seasons under first-year head coach Sabins.
This was the first time the Mountaineers had reached the MCWS, and they advanced to the semifinals, where they needed to beat North Carolina twice after dropping an earlier winner’s bracket game.
HC Steve Sabins Takes Pride In Taking West Virginia To SF
Following the loss to North Carolina, Steve Sabins praised the players, particularly the seniors, and called it the “best season in Mountaineer baseball history.” He also took pride in his players’ effort to mount a comeback after being down 12-1.
“You never want to go down, but if you’re going to go down, for me, being down 12-1 and scratching and clawing and fighting and running out of gas and giving literally everything that you have left in the tank to compete is poetic,” Sabins said in the post-game press conference.
“We talk about things that represent this state and this university, and that’s what we’re all about,” he added. That’s what we’ve always been all about. For the kids to embody those things and to fight back in that situation, I wouldn’t want to have it any other way.”
North Carolina will face Oklahoma in the championship series starting Saturday.
