Troy Trojans head coach Skylar Meade made history by guiding the baseball team to its first Men’s College World Series appearance in Omaha, NB. Since joining in 2022, Meade has steadily improved the team’s style and cohesion, leading to wins over seasoned D1 teams in regionals and super-regionals this season.
Ahead of their first-round debut at the MCWS, Meade held a press conference to discuss the team’s achievements this season and their expectations in Omaha. Additionally, the Trojans, representing the Sun Belt Conference, are one of only three teams in the tournament from a conference other than the highly competitive SEC.
Apart from the Trojans, West Virginia and North Carolina are the other two teams from different conferences at the tournament. The remaining five teams are from the Southeastern Conference, one of the most prominent and influential collegiate sports conferences.
During the press conference, Meade was asked to comment on the significant NIL budget gap between SEC programs and others, and he responded with a humorous remark.
“I’ll answer the last one first. They win. Now if like Schloss, Coach Bianco and them, they want to like leave a couple bills out there, I will certainly grab them on the way. They’re doing all right there,” Meade said.
Troy Could Churn Up a Major Surprise in Omaha
The Trojans have won all their games since losing their Gainesville Regional opener to Miami. They notched four straight wins over Rider, Miami, and No. 8 Florida to advance to the Super Regionals. The Trojans hosted Little Rock in the Super Regionals and swept their opponents with relative ease to book their ticket to Omaha, NB, for the MCWS.
Troy is a top offensive team heading into the College World Series, leading the Sun Belt in hits and doubles and ranking in the top 10 nationally in both categories. They rank second in the Sun Belt and 26th nationwide in home runs, underscoring their power-hitting ability in the batting lineup.
The Trojans might be lacking only in pitching depth, but if the program manages to shuffle their bullpen effectively, we could see the SBC representatives upset some bigger programs in the tournament. The Trojans open their College World Series account against West Virginia at 1:00 p.m. CT on June 12.
