New York Yankees shortstop Anthony Volpe drew criticism for a defensive lapse in the series finale against the Cleveland Guardians at Progressive Field. Although the Yankees won the game 8-4, fans online didn’t forget Volpe’s defensive mishap.
In addition to Volpe, Yankee skipper Aaron Boone also drew flak for defending the team’s shortsop. Boone’s decision to put Volpe as the shortstop in the lineup, over Jose Caballero, had already drawn flak from a section of Yankees fans.
Volpe’s defensive error happened in the bottom of the third inning. Guardians hitter Jose Ramirez hit a high chopper to short. The Yankees’ shortstop rushed the sequence, resulting in a wild throw to first base. First baseman Paul Goldschmidt didn’t have any chance.
Baseball fans on X vented their frustration over Volpe’s wild throw.
“He is so bad and I have 0 idea why the front office refuses to give up on him….,” wrote a fan.
“It was actually a good throw. Paul Goldschmidt shouldve had longer limbs like Wemby -Aaron Boone,” a fan commented, trolling the Yankees skipper.
“I’m convinced Boone doesn’t want to win,” another fan criticized the Yankees skipper.
“Par for the course. This guy is not a MLB player,” a fan chimed in.
“If they actually counted all the errors, this kid would shatter records,” a fan sarcastically noted.
“But according to Boone he’s elite defensively,” another user trolled the Yankees manager.
Anthony Volpe’s performance at the recent series against Guardians
Anthony Volpe experienced a highly volatile strech during the Yankees’ three-game series against the Guardians at the Progressive Field. He went 1 for 10 at the plate with one RBI, one run and one walk.
Volpe went hitless in two at-bats with a strikeout in the series opener on Monday. Moreover, he misplaced a 96.6mph line drive from Chase DeLauter, allowing Guardians to score a run. Still, Yankees won the game 7-5.
Volpe went hitless again the second game on Tuesday. He struck out two times in four at-bats. Still, the Yankees edged out a 3-2 victory.
Volpe managed a bounce-back performance in the series finale on Wednesday. His hard hit ball forced a second-inning field error, driving in a run for the Bronx Bombers. The shortstop later snapped his hitless streak with an RBI double to the left corner in the sixth inning.
Yankees won Game 3, 8-4, securing a series sweep. However, Volpe drew criticism for the defensive error, even though he robbed Brayan Rocchio of a hit with a spectacular diving stop in another play.
