The Alabama Crimson Tide are all but certain to book their ticket to Omaha, NB, for the MCWS. Currently, the No. 7-seeded Nationals are playing the St. John’s Red Storm in game 2 of the Tuscaloosa Super Regional. The Crimson Tide opened the contest with a 7-0 win in game 1 on Saturday, behind starting pitcher Tyler Fay’s nine-strikeout shutout gem.
In the game at Sewell-Thomas Stadium, Crimson Tide CF Bryce Fowler received a verbal warning after inappropriate actions in the seventh inning. With a 7-2 lead, Fowler drew a walk, flipped his bat, and said something to the pitcher before jogging to first. The umpire noticed and issued a warning.
Fans were quick to share their reactions to Fowler’s questionable actions, with some even lashing out at the CF and calling for an end to such gimmicks in a baseball game.
“Bat flipping a walk and chirping the pitcher while you’re up 5 on St. John’s, you’re really cool, bro. This kind of stuff needs to leave baseball,” one fan commented.
“Baseball players—some of them act like such fools, like this guy,” another fan commented.
“Eject him if not they will continue to do these things,” yet another fan commented.
Some other fans asked for stricter rules and actions against dissent during a game, further claiming that such actions after hitting a home run could have been okay, but not merely after drawing a walk.
“Agreed. Bat flipping and chirping off a walk lame. However doing it off a homerun is cool and should stay,” one fan commented.
“COACHES!!! Yes… YOU… the coach of the team/players. Put a stop to this “chirping” & “bat flipping” sub-juvenile maturity level nonsense! Make it clear to your players that you have ZERO tolerance for such behavior, and that there will be significant consequences if done!,” another fan commented.
“Baseball needs the equivalent of a UNS penalty in FB or a Technical Foul in Basketball. Right now it is either, nothing or ejection. No in between. There are plenty of times where the action doesn’t warrant an ejection, but also deserves some penalty,” yet another fan commented.
Alabama-St. John’s Super Regionals Game 2 Suspended
The Crimson Tide’s bid for the College World Series has been delayed. Game 2 of the Super Regional against St. John’s has been postponed until 11 a.m. Monday, June 8, due to on-field conditions.
Alabama was leading 7-2 going into the eighth inning when the delay started at 5:36 p.m. After more than 4.5 hours, the game was eventually called off. After Saturday’s 8-0 victory over the Red Storms, the Crimson Tide now needs just one more win to qualify for its first College World Series appearance since 1999.
The winner of the Tuscaloosa Super Regional will take on either Oklahoma or Kansas in the opening round of the MCWS in Omaha, NE.
