Los Angeles Dodgers relief pitcher Tanner Scott and his family faced disturbing threats following his recent game against the Philadelphia Phillies on Saturday. Despite leading 3-1 when Scott entered the game, he allowed three earned runs in the eighth inning, contributing to a 4-3 loss.
The Phillies tied the series 1-1 with this win, but the Dodgers bounced back in the final game to conclude their six-game homestand on a positive note. After Scott’s loss, some individuals online began sending death threats to him and his family, prompting widespread criticism from baseball fans on social media.
Many condemned the threats as unacceptable and stressed that such behavior is inappropriate in professional sports. Others noted that the players are everyday human beings just trying to do their best for the team.
“Unreal. Tanner Scott is not only having a great year, he’s a HUMAN BEING and I’ll defend him and his family to the death if I have to. Just shameful behavior and I hope him and Maddie know the real ones will be much louder than the pitiful, hateful, losers. We love 66,” one fan commented.
“This is such a real problem across the league but MLB is sponsored by and actively push betting companies which greatly feeds into this. We have to try to fix this issue because it’s so nasty,” another fan commented.
“Absolutely unacceptable under any circumstance. No real fan would do this, probably a loser who lost money gambling. Hope they find the person and they serve time,” yet another fan commented.
Other fans continued to criticize the unfortunate situation Scott and his wife faced, calling for MLB intervention and strict rules to protect players and their families. Meanwhile, some others highlighted how well Scott had been performing in recent years, aside from the recent game against the Phillies.
“This is absolutely DISGUSTING.. there should NEVER EVER be a reason to threaten any of our #Dodgers players, their wife & kids. If you can’t take a loss, regardless what team you’re rooting for, then don’t even bother to speak. Next time Maddie, take legal action. ENOUGH IS ENOUGH!” one fan commented.
“This is ridiculous. There’s never a good excuse for this nonsense. Besides he’s been one or the best relievers in the majors all year besides the other day. People need to chill,” another fan commented.
“Evil stuff. I would love to see the MLB put together some kind of player safety department specifically focused on finding these folks online and banning them for life. You have to find a way to create consequences for this behavior,” yet another fan commented.
Despite a 1-2 Record, Tanner Scott Has Been Fairly Consistent This Season
The Dodgers have a 20-6 record in the 26 games where Scott has pitched as a reliever. He holds an overall record of 1-2 but has already achieved five saves this season. The LHP, who signed a four-year, $72 million contract with the reigning World Series champions in 2025, boasts a 2.19 ERA, 28 strikeouts, and a 0.69 WHIP over 24.2 innings pitched this season.
Despite a disappointing outing against the Phillies on Saturday, Scott remains one of the most reliable and consistent relievers for the Dodgers’ bullpen, which has faced numerous challenges this year due to injuries among pitchers.
Although the malicious act by an online hater is undoubtedly disgusting, the league should implement stricter rules regarding fan behavior, both inside stadiums and on social media.
