During the series opener at Yankee Stadium on Tuesday night, Cleveland Guardians sportscasters teased New York Yankees second baseman Jazz Chisholm Jr. As Chisholm approached the plate from the deck in the bottom of the second inning, Guardians’ commentator Tom Hamilton subtly criticized the Bahamian for appearing on the Jimmy Fallon show.
“He predicted the Yankees would win the World Series during his appearance on the Jimmy Fallon show. It’s impressive that he was able to be on the show despite batting .239,” said Hamilton. Baseball fans quickly responded to this viral incident, with many arguing it was unfair to criticize Chisholm Jr., who had only appeared on the show to promote his charity foundation.
“Never in the history of this game has a player gotten so much hate for going on a show to promote a charity,” one fan commented.
“Genuinely no other player in MLB gets this treatment; the guy went on to PROMOTE HIS CHARITY, and we’ve got opposing sportscasters making fun of him,” another fan commented.
“Instead of being uneducated, maybe they should mention his charity that gives children in struggling communities access to sports,” yet another fan commented.
Some fans criticized the sportscaster for his passive-aggressive comments directed at Chisholm Jr., with many urging him to better understand the purpose of his appearance on the show.
“It was for a charity, maybe someone should show the old hag how to use the internet to search things up before speaking,” one fan commented.
“He was promoting a charity. Hamilton is a decrepit old dinosaur calling games for a loser franchise,” another fan commented.
“Let’s just say most people would rather listen to Chisholm than Hammy,” yet another fan commented.
The Yankees Would Need Jazz Chisholm Jr. to Overcome His Rocky Start This Season
The Bahamians’ start to this season has been difficult, with a batting average of .239 and an OPS of .700. Yankees fans have voiced concerns about the 2B because, during the offseason, Chisholm Jr. claimed he could produce a monumental 50-50 campaign with 50 home runs and 50 stolen bases.
Current projections hint towards Chisholm ending the season with 16 home runs and 20 stolen bases. After a rough start, his last 20 games have been promising, as he has batted .289 with 22 hits.
The Yankees rely on Jazz to contribute offensively, and he’s shown improvement over the past 20 games. With Aaron Judge struggling and Ben Rice consistently producing at the plate, it’s now time for the star 2B to step up.
