The No. 2 seed Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets faced a surprising defeat at the Atlanta Regional after losing to the Oklahoma Sooners in a crucial extra-inning game. The Sooners, who were behind 7-3 until the end of the sixth inning, made a dramatic comeback by scoring four runs in the last three innings, forcing the game into extra innings.
While the Sooners’ relievers pitched flawlessly, allowing no runs in the final four innings, the offense maintained its hitting streak by scoring the winning run in the bottom of the tenth with a walkoff hit. This 8-7 victory eliminated the Yellow Jackets and sent the Sooners on to the Super Regionals as Atlanta Regional champions.
Fans reacted quickly to the No. 2 seed’s ouster in Atlanta. Many criticized the program as cocky and called out the losing team’s coach for allowing the starting pitcher to continue in a winner-takes-all game despite a 100-pitch count.
“GT fans paraded around a midweek game all season, and their best team ever gets walked off at home to end their season. That fan base deserves every bit of misery that comes their way,” one fan commented.
“Idk who the Georgia Tech manager is but this guy is awful at his job why is a college kid at 100 pitches who had given up 5 runs still in the game???” another fan commented.
“This special Yellow Jackets squad losing at home in a winner take all game as a national seed on a walk off is disgusting,” yet another fan commented.
Other fans commended the Sooners for their resilience in winning two consecutive games against the No. 2 seed. The victory was especially significant because the Yellow Jackets, despite being heavily favored to advance to the super regionals, were defeated at home.
“Oklahoma walking off georgia tech the number two seed in atlanta to advance to the supers is pure chaos the sooners came into hostile territory and delivered the dagger in dramatic fashion this is why the postseason in college baseball hits different one swing changes everything,” one fan commented.
“What a finish by Oklahoma. Walking off Georgia Tech on the road and knocking out the No. 2 seed is the definition of clutch,” another fan commented.
“What a finish. Oklahoma said “road game? top seed? hostile crowd?” and still found a way to walk it off. The Sooners just silenced Atlanta and sent the No. 2 seed packing in dramatic fashion,” yet another fan commented.
Georgia Tech Faltered at the Regionals After Posting a Credible Overall Record
The Yellow Jackets had a record-breaking season, posting a 50-10 overall record and earning the No. 2 seed behind UCLA. They initially defeated the Sooners 9-3 in the Regional to reach the final. Still, the Sooners bounced back in two critical late games, allowing them to advance to the super regionals despite not being highly seeded.
Jackets ace Mason Patel pitched five scoreless innings for a 7-3 lead. Still, the bullpen faltered as Sooners’ Dayton Tockey hit a walk-off solo shot into center field in the tenth, sending Oklahoma to the super regionals.
While the Jackets wonder what went wrong, the Sooners prepare to face Kansas in the super regionals for a chance at the Men’s College World Series final eight in Omaha, NB.
