Los Angeles Dodgers two-way phenom Shohei Ohtani recorded yet another credible performance, going 1 for 4, driving in two, and scoring a run in the series opener against the Pittsburgh Pirates at PNC Park. After a decent start by Pirates ace Paul Skenes on Tuesday night, the bullpen relievers entered in the top of the seventh with the game tied at 2-2.
With a runner on first and third and no outs, Ohtani stepped up to the plate to loud jeers and unnecessary chants from some fans inside the stadium. The chants started with “Shohei sucks,” which then shifted to “overrated.” Unbothered, Ohtani kept his focus on hitting and muscled a ball over the infield for a two-run double, silencing the crowd yet again with his amazing hitting prowess.
Fans reacted quickly to the chants directed at Ohtani at PNC Park, with many criticizing a section of fans inside the stadium for the unnecessary act.
“Of all the chants you want to do, calling Ohtani overrated might be the dumbest,” one fan commented.
“The overrated chant is most cursed chant ever lol it ALWAYS backfires,” another fan commented.
“Chants ‘Shohei sucks & overrated’ only to then give up 10 runs the same inning. Now that’s funny,” yet another fan commented.
Some other fans pointed to the Pirates’ loss as bad karma for the unnecessary chants directed at a player who, over the past five seasons, has won four MVP awards.
“Screaming that a great player and super nice guy ‘sucks’ is bad karma. They put the whammy on the Pirates with that,” one fan commented.
“Pirates fans chanting ‘Shohei sucks/overrated’ then error + Ohtani double = instant karma. Poked the bear and got absolutely devoured… baseball gods eating good,” another fan commented.
“If you’d watched the Blue Jays, who got hit with a home run right after leading the ‘We don’t need you’ chant against him, you probably wouldn’t have bothered with such a pointless stunt. Pittsburgh fans would do well to take a broader look at the baseball world as a whole,” yet another fan commented.
Shohei Ohtani is Having an Incredible Season at Both Ends of the Field
Ohtani’s 2026 season with the Dodgers could be his finest yet, possibly the best in history. After 60 games, his .939 OPS tops all qualified NL hitters. His 0.74 ERA is the lowest among pitchers with at least 60 innings.
Despite his impressive performance, he hasn’t yet had a truly great season in either pitching or hitting. His 2022 was his best on the mound but poor at the plate, while 2024 was his best offensively, but he didn’t pitch that year. Currently, many analysts and Dodger fans believe that 2026 could be his most outstanding major-league season to date.
The Japanese ace’s two-way talent will be on full display tomorrow at PNC Park, as he is scheduled to start game 2 of the series against the Pirates. Ohtani’s start could result in more embarrassment for Pittsburgh fans if he manages to stack up his strikeout numbers without giving up many runs.
