Former Arizona State Sun Devils catcher Samantha Swan has signed with the two-time defending national champions, the Texas Longhorns, just two days after entering the NCAA portal. The Georgetown native was presumably signed to replace one of the Longhorns’ stars, Reese Atwood, who has been the program leader in home runs (74) and RBIs (283).
Swan, ranked as the No. 9 overall player nationally and the top catcher in the NCAA transfer portal by Softball America, is the first offseason addition to commit to the reigning national champions. She has one year of eligibility left. Swan graduated from Georgetown High School and spent three successful years with the Sun Devils before transferring to the Horns.
Fans were quick to share their reactions to Swan’s transfer and signing with the Longhorns ahead of the next campaign.
“Tampered with much. Goes from almost knocking them out to playing for them 2 days after the portal opens… smells a bit fishy,” one fan commented.
“Anyone that has already made the transfer only 2 days in already had the deal in place. The whole thing is a joke!!!” another fan commented.
“By the way ain’t nobody else recruiting her… been a done deal since the supers,” yet another fan commented.
Some other fans pointed out that she was a grad student and that she had the free will to enter the transfer portal and move with only one year of eligibility left, while another stated that it was a smart move on Swan’s part since she just wants to win a national championship before her collegiate career ends.
“She’s a grad student. Grad students can enter at any time they want,” one fan commented.
“Leave this girl alone. She’s a good player who wants to win a championship,” another fan commented.
“She’s a grad transfer btw, they are different compared to the undergraduate transfers,” yet another fan commented.
Samantha Swan Had an Exemplary 2026 Campaign With the Sun Devils
Swan had an outstanding season with the Sun Devils, playing a key role in Arizona State’s run to the Austin Super Regional. One of her key highlights was helping the Devils win the first game against the Longhorns, where she went 2-for-3 and drove in three RBIs in the 4-1 victory as the Sun Devils almost halted the Horns’ run at Super Regionals.
She wrapped up the season with impressive stats: a slash line of .383/.700/450, 69 hits, 12 home runs, 55 RBIs, 21 extra base hits (all doubles), 39 runs scored, 126 total bases, 15 walks, and nine stolen bases, all while boasting a 1.151 OPS. Swan also shone in 25 games with multiple hits, including 14 games with more than one hit, earning her a well-deserved first-team All-Big 12 honor in her first season.
The Longhorns fanbase can look forward to her stepping in as the starting catcher for Mike White in her final season, as the Horns aim to defend their consecutive national titles and attempt to achieve the rare three-peat in collegiate sports history.
