Controversial Interference Call To End Rockies Vs Pirates Nail-Biter Divides Fans: “Umpires Should Be Ashamed”;”Correct Call”

The Colorado Rockies edged out the Pittsburgh Pirates 2-1 at Coors Field on Saturday night. This win secured the series for Colorado, with the final game set for Sunday. They had previously won the series opener 4-3 on Friday night. Although the home team emerged victorious, the Pirates protested a key interference call made by the umpiring crew on the last play.

In the ninth inning’s final moment, with the bases loaded, two outs, and trailing 2-1, an infield hit led to a disputed call. The runner from second appeared to obstruct the Rockies’ third baseman, prompting an immediate review. Umpires ruled that the runner’s cleat lightly touched the infielder’s glove, calling interference and ending the game on a controversial note.

Fans were quick to share their mixed reactions to the interference call. While some agreed with the decision, others criticized the call.

Tomoyuki Sugano got the better of the pitcher’s duel against Pirates ace Paul Skenes on the night, giving up just one earned run on four hits and striking out five in six innings pitched.

After the thrilling win, Colorado manager Warren Schaeffer reflected on his team’s performance, highlighting Sugano’s outing as the pivotal moment that shifted momentum and the game in their favor. Furthermore, he praised his team’s offense for taking the game to Skenes from the outset.

“He [Sugano] competed like crazy, and it was a professional outing from him… We made him [Skenes] work. I thought we took good at-bats, and our plan was good,” Shaeffer said in the postgame interview.

The series finale between the Pirates and the Rockies is set for Sunday at Coors Field. Afterward, Colorado will continue their six-game homestand by hosting the Boston Red Sox starting Monday.
