“It’s No Good” – All-Star MVP Cody Bellinger Strongly Opposes Potential MLB Salary Cap

Just hours before registering a monumental hit in the 2026 MLB All-Star Game on Tuesday, New York Yankees outfielder Cody Bellinger was asked about the idea of enforcing a salary cap during the ongoing CBA discussions between the league and the MLBPA.

Bellinger didn’t focus on concerns like competitive balance or payroll disparities when asked about the impact of a salary cap. Instead, he questioned the true motivations behind the proposal and the reasons team owners might support it.

“You know, I think if the billionaires are wanting it, they’re billionaires for a reason, and they want to manage their portfolio as much as possible, and we players understand that. So the answer to your question is, no good,” Bellinger told SNY Yankees.

MLB has proposed a cap-and-floor system in negotiations for the next collective bargaining agreement, indicating a possible renewal of owner-player tensions. As the current agreement expires on Dec. 1, the threat of a lockout at the beginning of the 2027 season remains significant.

“The gap is $441 million” – MLB Commissioner on Need For Salary Cap

MLB has formulated its plan to promote competitive balance, citing the widening financial gap between wealthy teams and smaller clubs. The proposal sets a strict payroll cap and a minimum spending requirement to prevent giants like the Dodgers, Yankees, and Mets from outspending rivals.

“The gap is $441 million,” MLB Commissioner Rob Manfred was quoted as saying by USA Today. “It defies human experience to ask a fan to think that the bottom end of that gap has the same opportunity to win as the top end.”

Players argue that a hard salary cap could limit earnings and affect a record-breaking free-agent market. They also note that some owners choose not to invest despite having resources.
