The North Carolina Tar Heels and the Oklahoma Sooners opened the CWS Championship Series on Saturday to determine this year’s national champion. Game 1 was exciting, with the Sooners capitalizing on the Tar Heels’ errors to win 9-3 and take a 1-0 lead. Oklahoma is now one win away from securing its third national championship in program history.
The Sooners’ offense dominated Tar Heels’ pitcher Jason DeCaro, scoring seven runs and forcing his exit after 3.2 innings. The Tar Heels struggled defensively, highlighted by a collision between second baseman Gavin Gallaher and shortstop Jake Schaffner while attempting to catch a pop fly early in the game.
Fans quickly shared their opinions on the viral moment from Game 1, with many saying such an error should not happen at this level. Communication between players on defense needs to improve.
Game 2 will be a must-win for the Tar Heels to keep their chances alive of claiming the program’s first national championship. Due to uncertain weather, Game 2 on Sunday will also be played in daylight to avoid delays.
Despite the Loss, North Carolina’s Head Coach Asserted the Need to Continue Trusting the Process
After the heartbreaking loss, Tar Heels’ head coach Scott Forbes praised his unit for competing until the very end and said he trusted the process and his players to deliver a big result on Sunday.
“This team’s come too far. I trust them. We’ve believed in what we’ve believed in all year. I’m going to tell them tonight, we did it all year… But I’m not going to go in there and try to pump them up. I don’t need to do that with this team. I remind them, man, go to bed and forget about it… Sometimes it can be even harder to get that second one when you win the first one because you know what you’re going to get from the team that lost that first one. So we’ll just keep doing exactly what we’ve been doing all year. And I’ll trust that process and I’ll trust our players,” Forbes said in the postgame interview.
Should the Tar Heels win tomorrow’s game, the CWS Finals will feature the decisive game at Charles Schwab Field in Omaha, NB, on Monday.
