MLB Insider Buzz: Isaac Paredes Thrust Into Red Sox Trade Talks as Wilyer Abreu Standoff Fuels Three-Team Buzz

The Boston Red Sox are interested in trading for Houston Astros third baseman Isaac Paredes; however, the asking price is not what they want. The Astros are also on the edge of the luxury tax threshold, so they want no extra money from this potential deal.

The Red Sox have witnessed multiple notable departures from their infield last year. They traded Rafael Devers to the San Francisco Giants before last year’s trade deadline. Moreover, third baseman Alex Bregman opted out of his three-year, $120 million deal to become a free agent and eventually signed a five-year deal with the Chicago Cubs.

On the other hand, the Astros have a surplus in the infield, but they also face the problem of crossing the luxury tax threshold. MLB insider Chandler Rome reported that the franchise will address this surplus in a way that doesn’t hurt their books with more extra money.

Thus, instead of asking Jarren Duran, they asked for Wilyer Abreu, but that’s not the deal the Red Sox wants to make, per insider Ken Rosenthal.

In the wake of this trade standoff, the two teams might have to add a third team in the mix so a trade can happen and both get what they want, considering all things.

According to Astros insider Chandler Rome, the Cardinals were that third wheel and they have all discussed a deal that sends Brendan Donovan to Houston and Isaac Paredes to Boston. However, the deal has not gone through yet.

Red Sox Infield Trade Targets Except Isaac Paredes

If the deal with the Astros doesn’t go through, the Red Sox have other options to mull over.

They can trade for Chicago Cubs star Nico Hoerner, a middle infielder with two Gold Gloves. He hit .297 with 29 stolen bases in 2025. Rumors have that the Red Sox can pivot to this option if the Paredes deal doesn’t happen.

A standalone deal with the St. Louis Cardinals is also possible, involving utilityman Brendan Donovan. In 2025, his offensive numbers were not that good, but his defensive versatility is the biggest selling point here.

Another important thing to note is that the Red Sox want an offensive upgrade after signing Isiah Kiner-Falefa on a one-year deal.
