The New York Yankees may have moved on from the idea of re-signing Cody Bellinger, while Alex Bregman’s free agency has received an update. With only few weeks remaining in free agency, the offseason is getting into the final stretch of roster building ahead of the 2026 MLB season.
Let’s take a look at the latest update on the Yankees’ pursuit and Bregman’s free agency.
Yankees Moves On From Cody Bellinger For Bo Bichette and Kyle Tucker
After formally extending two offers to Cody Bellinger, the Yankees’ pursuit of Cody Bellinger might have come to an end. While they wanted to re-sign Bellinger, who opted out of his contract after a strong season, the negotiations have struck an impasse.
According to ESPN’s Buster Olney, the Yankees are now focused on signing two prominent free agents, Kyle Tucker and Bo Bichette.
Tucker offers similar value as Bellinger with high production upside. The outfielder is expected to sign a contract in the vicinity of $400 million, but as the offseason has progressed, a big number is no longer a possibility. The Yankees are unwilling to sign Bellinger to a long-term contract and will now focus on enticing Tucker to sign a short-term, high AAV deal.
Meanwhile, their push for Bichette will make their roster a bit complicated. They’ll have to ask Jazz Chisholm Jr. to take a position in the outfield or make a trade for him to get an outfield player.
Alex Bregman In Control Of His Future
Alex Bregman’s free agency is in its final stretch and a decision could be made soon. On Saturday afternoon at Fenway Fest, Boston Red Sox manager Alex Cora said the team has already made their feelings known about re-signing the third baseman, as the manager suggested that it’s Bregman who needs to make the decision.
“You’ve got to ask him,” Cora said about Bregman. “The ball is in his court … I like the player. We like the player. Let’s see what happens.”
Earlier in the week, it was reported that the Red Sox had made an “aggressive” offer to the third baseman.
Apart from Boston, the Yankees, Diamondbacks, Cubs, Blue Jays, and Tigers are among the teams interested in the services of a two-time World Series champion.
