Zac Gallen is a free agent starting pitcher who is yet to be signed. There has emerged a possibility that the right-hander could go back to the Arizona Diamondbacks. Meanwhile, Trey Mancini has recently signed a new free agent contract.
Let’s discuss both these updates.
Zac Gallen Returning to Dbacks?
Zac Gallen’s free agency hasn’t attracted many teams. The right-hander is still unsigned, and since he declined the qualifying offer, if any team not named the Diamondbacks chooses to sign him will have to pick up a compensatory draft pick.
On Monday, MLB insider Ken Rosenthal discussed the free agency of starting pitchers Framber Valdez and Gallen. He was asked whether either of these guys could return to their former teams. As far as Gallen was concerned, he said there’s a slight chance.
“I would say neither has a very good chance of returning to their former team,” Rosenthal said. “Could I see the Diamondbacks maybe doing a short-term thing with Gallen? I could possibly see that. But at the same time, they are a team that, because they held on to Ketel Marte, are not maybe as financially flexible as they would have been had they traded him… I would say Gallen has a better chance of going back to his former team than Valdez, certainly.”
Rosenthal also said that Gallen’s market remains largely unexplored.
Angels Roll the Dice on Trey Mancini
Trey Mancini has finally found a destination this offseason. The utility player has signed a minor league contract with the Los Angeles Angels. The deal reunites Mancini with Angels hitting coach Brady Anderson, who helped the former Orioles star with his swing.
Previously, he was signed with the Baltimore Orioles, where he played six seasons, hitting .270 with a .797 OPS and 117 homers in 701 games.
Following his stint with the Orioles, he appeared in 51 games for the Houston Astros and 79 for the Chicago Cubs. His last MLB game came two seasons ago. In 2025, he played for the Diamondbacks’ Triple-A affiliate Reno, hitting .308 with 16 doubles, 16 homers, and a .895 OPS in 74 games. His 60 appearances came as a first baseman and the remaining three were in the outfield.
