Former Major League infielder Todd Frazier rallied behind Panamanian utility player Jose Caballero, arguing that he should receive consistent starts with the Yankees over other shortstop prospects, such as Anthony Volpe, for most of the remainder of the season. Frazier’s comments came during the latest episode of Foul Territory, as the panel discussed choosing between Volpe and Caballero.
“I’m with you. I think you give Caballero the shot and you see what he can do. He’s earned it. He deserves it. But again, when you get the answers from Booney, and you hear the questions that are asked, and it’s not a full, just straight-on yes or no, or this guy’s going to play, or that guy’s going to play,” Frazier said.
“No, well, this guy’s going to go here and then we’ll do this and that. I think that’s, you know, one of the worrisome things. You’ve got to go with the guy that has been playing better. And right now, I’m not saying it’ll happen the whole time, but right now Caballero is that guy,” he added.
Caballero outperforms Volpe in providing stability at the position. While he’s not the long-term solution, he’s at least better than Volpe. Currently, a player like Max Schuemann, who was discarded by an underperforming Athletics team, might be just as viable. He could even be a better shortstop option now.
MLB Analyst Suggests a Lucrative Shortstop Trade For the Yankees This Season
Sporting News senior MLB analyst Billy Heyen mentioned a lucrative trade deal for the Yankees ahead of the midseason trade deadline that could propel them in the right direction and potentially put an end to their troubles at the shortstop position. Heyen suggested the Bronx Bombers go for LA Angels shortstop Zach Neto.
“The New York Yankees have an uncertain future at short, too, although they have more options with Anthony Volpe and Jose Caballero, along with rising prospect George Lombard Jr. Neto would be intriguing as a player under club control for three years after this one,” Heyen wrote.
“That would make his trade cost higher, but it would also make him a more exciting acquisition for a new team. And if Neto is on the block come July, he’ll be the type of guy who can determine the World Series champion if he ends up in the right place,” he added.
Neto is among the top young MLB players, so acquiring him would be expensive. However, he could serve as the Yankees’ shortstop for the next ten years, securing that position. Additionally, he has a strong bat, providing another impactful hitter to the lineup. This season, Neto is batting .229 with 13 home runs and 32 RBIs.
