West Virginia’s Pat McAfee watched the opening MCWS game at Charles Schwab Stadium, featuring his alma mater, the Mountaineers, against the Troy Trojans. The sportscaster, a former wrestler and football player, now hosts an ESPN talk show and serves as a respected College GameDay analyst.
While West Virginia started strong in Omaha, NB, beating Troy 7-5, McAfee criticized an earlier, disappointing incident at a local bar (Rocco’s). He went to pitch for the CWS Jell-O shot challenge but was ridiculed when he asked to pay with a check, and the manager said it would probably bounce. McAfee was about to drop a $150,000 check at the pub.
Fans shared their reactions to the ordeal McAfee faced, with many calling out the local bar for negligent and rude behavior toward one of the best college gameday analysts and talk show hosts in the country.
“I seriously cannot believe Pat McAfee was going to write a $150,000 check for the @CWSShotBoard, but the owner of Rocco’s told him it would bounce. All because they didn’t call ahead and tell them he was coming. Pat had no idea he was suppose to“, one fan commented.
“Not a good look for Rocco’s!! Insane!” another fan commented.
“Embarrassing as a Nebraskan. You have THE guy in sports media in your place and you act in a distressing manner. Smh,” yet another fan commented.
Some other fans voiced their ire toward the local bar and the general manager, stating that the place was running a gimmick with the Jell-O shot challenge and that fans of any team should avoid going there, instead suggesting some better bars to visit.
“Rocco’s has always been trash and most people in Omaha don’t like it. It’s a huge gimmick considering they take 3.50 of those 5$ shots for themselves. The GM/Owner has always been unwelcoming. Don’t let this cloud your thoughts on Omaha as a whole. Plenty of other great places!!” one fan commented.
“Rocco’s is a massive scam and I’m happy it’s being called out finally,” another fan commented.
“Nobody goes to Rocco’s when it’s not the CWS. They are lucky to be located where they are, without the CWS they’d be dead,” yet another fan commented.
Pat McAfee Narrated His Ordeal at Rocco’s
During the latest episode of the Pat McAfee Show on ESPN, the college sports analyst narrated the disappointing incident that occurred at Rocco’s, where the bar’s general manager mocked McAfee.
“I go, ‘So do I like, write a check?’ He goes, ‘yours would bounce, I think.’ He just kept walking. It wasn’t like a joking thing. How does this work? He goes, ‘card.’ I go, ‘Well, how’d that guy do $300,000? Is there a credit card out there that has a $300,000 limit? That’s incredible, I need to find that,” McAfee said.
“It was very much like a, you’re lucky to be giving us this money to do this entire thing as opposed to like, a (celebration). And I think they were treating everybody like that,” he added.
The first day of the CWS is in the books, with North Carolina registering a win over Ole Miss alongside West Virginia’s win over Troy. On Saturday, Alabama will take on Oklahoma, and Georgia will take on Texas.
