MLB analyst Mike Felger shared an interesting take on Mike Trout amid the Angels star’s links to the Boston Red Sox.
Earlier in May, the Boston radio host said his source said the Red Sox were interested in trading for the three-time MVP. The report sparked a discussion in MLB circles about the possibility.
On Friday, Felger said he is unsure if Trout turned down the Red Sox.
“I don’t know if Mike Trout turned down the Red Sox necessarily, but my commentary at the time I think was dead on,” Felger said on 98.5 The Sports Hub’s “Felger and Mazz” show. “They were interested in him. I think the Angels would be amenable to moving on from Mike Trout at this point, giving him a shot to go win and start a rebuild and just resetting their franchise. I think that there could have been common ground with the Angels and the Red Sox on what the return would be. I don’t think that was the hangup. The hangup is Mike Trout.”
Felger said that while the Angels may have been ready to accept trading Trout, it’s the outfielder who may have lost the taste to win.
“You know, he’s in his early thirties,” Felger added. “He would rather just stay in Anaheim (with the Angels) and lose than go somewhere else and finish his career with a championship-contending team and get a taste of that life. And apparently he’s happy just to sit and lose in Anaheim, which is crazy and disappointing. So I think he has turned down offers elsewhere. I don’t know if he turned it down here necessarily. Maybe he did.”
Mike Trout’s Contract Could Be An Issue For Angels
Trout signed a 12-year, $426.5 million contract with the Angels that runs through the 2030 season. He is still owed roughly $148 million over the next four seasons.
To find a team to commit $37 million annually to Trout, who is no longer in his prime, will be difficult. Then there’s a trade clause, which means any trade that comes LA’s way will still require Trout’s approval.
Last season, Trout indicated he is not willing to leave the Angels as he wants to win a World Series with the team. Given how the Angels are structured, they don’t look like contenders.
