Los Angeles Dodgers catcher Dalton Rushing made a taunting gesture against Philadelphia Phillies star Bryson Stott in Thursday’s game.
The moment happened in the bottom of the fifth inning when the Phillies star was on second base. The Dodgers catcher caught a bunt popped up in foul territory while Stott hesitated between second and third. This is when the Dodgers star taunted Stott to dare and steal third off his arm.
Stott, who is signed to a one-year, $5.9 million contract, didn’t fall for the bait and retreated to second safely. However, Rushing’s confident trash talk became a talking point on the internet.
“literally what is his problem,” one fan wrote.
Dalton Rushing Daring Gesture Followed by Bryson Stott’s Baserunning Error
Ironically, Bryson Stott was tagged out on the very next play.
Stott attempted to advance to third base on a sharply hit ground ball to third baseman Max Muncy. It was a big baserunning play blunder from the Phillies star as he was caught in a rundown with Muncy before being tagged out.
Interestingly, this time, Dalton Rushing did not taunt or celebrate at Stott’s expense. Instead, the Dodgers catcher gave him a light pat on the back and also shared some words.
Meanwhile, Dodgers broadcasters had a puzzling reaction to this rundown and blunder from Stott.
“What are these guys doing?” broadcaster Joe Davis said.
“No clue,” Orel Hershiser replied.
The Phillies have been making a lot of baserunning errors lately. Just a night earlier, J.T. Realmuto was involved in an embarrassing rundown that Phillies acting manager Don Mattingly openly criticized.
“I don’t know what JT was thinking,” Mattingly said.
Nonetheless, Stott’s mistake helped the Dodgers maintain momentum in what became a 9-5 victory and a series win. For the Dodgers, Rushing was the star performer, coming up with three RBIs, including a home run. Muncy also went long in the win. Meanwhile, for the Phillies, Stott went 1-for-4. Alec Bohm hit a home run as well.
After improving to 65-38, the Dodgers will head to New York following their White House visit for a three-game series at Citi Field.
