The New York Mets’ struggles continued as they suffered their fifth straight loss on Wednesday, falling 10-5 to the Chicago Cubs at Citi Field. In the first three games of the series, the Cubs scored 29 runs, while the Mets managed only 14. On Wednesday night, the Mets committed six errors, worsening their situation.
Tensions rose in the ninth when fans at Citi Field chanted former Mets first baseman Pete Alonso’s name as the team trailed 8-5. Alonso signed a five-year, $155 million contract with the Orioles in the offseason.

Alonso is having a solid season with the Orioles, batting .253 with 18 home runs, 55 RBIs, and an .815 OPS. The Orioles (38-44) are fourth in the AL East.
The Mets Hold One of the Worst Records in the League
The Mets are 34-46 and sit at the bottom of the NL East. They possess one of the league’s worst records, better than only the Giants, Rockies, Red Sox, Angels, and Royals.
Their chances of making the postseason are slim. Their loss to the Cubs was their third consecutive series defeat. The series finale is scheduled for Thursday in Queens.
The Mets will conclude their seven-game homestand by hosting the Phillies in a crucial intra-divisional series at Citi Field this weekend.
