Following the hit, the Diamondbacks’ starting pitcher Ryne Nelson was slow to cover the bag, leading to Vargas sprinting toward first from his fielding position to record the out. Both Muncy and Vargas simultaneously chose the same inside path to the base, which resulted in a full-speed crash.

So, I got to the inside of the bag and I thought he was going to stay, you know, on that side and, uh, it felt like neither of us knew which direction we were going to go and then we both went the wrong direction and bang,” said Max Muncy.
He added:
“I obviously I really hope, you know, Vargas is okay. I I sent something over to him. I hope hoping he’s doing all right and he’s not too bad. Um, but it is just bad.”
