“On What Planet Is This Okay?” – Fans Shocked After Red Sox 3B Coach Enters Field Of Play In Bizarre Moment vs Orioles

An unusual on-field moment took place involving the Boston Red Sox’s third-base coach, Chad Epperson, during their clash against the Baltimore Orioles, where the coach entered the field of play. This incident quickly gained attention online and drew comments from fans, who expressed their shock following the incident.

This moment occurred during the first inning of the Red Sox’s matchup against the Orioles on June 3, 2026. The former team’s interim third base coach went directly onto the infield grass inside fair territory to wave baserunner Wilyer Abreu home. His team’s Willson Contreras hit a double deep down the left-field line at Fenway Park, which is a blind spot for the third-base coach’s box.

After being unable to see the ball, Epperson sprinted onto the field of play to secure a clear line of sight, aggressively waving Abreu home while standing near the opponent team’s third baseman Coby Mayo. Ultimately, the aggressive send did not pan out. Even though Abreu was initially called safe at the plate, a replay review by the Orioles overturned the call.

This situation stunned everyone in the baseball community; however, the Red Sox’s third-base coach’s actions were completely legal. A video of this moment quickly went viral online, which wasn’t well received by the fans.

One of the users on X, confused with the situation wrote:

“I get he’s trying to get an angle and see but on what planet is this okay lol.”

Unsure of what happened, another fan online opined on the situation, commenting:

“”I don’t even know if you can do that.” Third base coach was in fair territory waving the runner home.”

Stunned by the incident, one of the followers wrote:

“You can watch baseball for 50 years and then one day be like – wow, I’ve never seen that before.”

Slamming Epperson, one of the fans chimed in:

““He’s trying to see the ball” Yo, the ball is in the left field corner, the runner doesn’t need your eyes to tell him where it is, he can see it. Stay off the field.”

Boston Red Sox manager weighed in on the unusual action by the third base coach, Chad Epperson

Following the match between the Boston Red Sox and the Baltimore Orioles, a discussion took place of whether Chad Epperson entering the field of play violated any rules. The Orioles’ manager, Craig Albernaz, revealed that the umpires told Epperson that if he crossed into the fair territory again, he could have been removed from the game.

Weighing his thoughts on this claim, Red Sox manager Chad Tracy said that his team’s third-base coach was warned by the umpire; however, he emphasized that he was allowed to do so until he affected the play in any way.

“Incorrect. Well, he was told that, but that is incorrect and it’s since been corrected. You are allowed to do that so long as you do not interfere with the play in any way,” Red Sox’s manager said.

Stating that Tracy was confident about Epperson being right from the start, as he had seen these things happen before, he weighed in more on the situation, adding:

“I’ve seen it happen here. Flo said he’s seen it happen here. Flo actually told me he’s done it here as a third base coach here with Baltimore. Like ‘yeah I’ve done that, there’s been multiple times I’ve been inside the chalk.’”
