Blue Jays Spring Training Storyline: MLB Insider Provides Clarity On Jose Berrios’ 2026 Roster Outlook

Since making his big league debut in 2016, Jose Berrios has been an extremely consistent performer. For his career as a whole, the Puerto Rican boasts a 108-82 record, a 4.08 ERA, and 1,481 strikeouts.

Joining the Toronto Blue Jays via trade in July 2021, Berrios has been an important part of the pitching staff. However, a tough 2025 season, in which he struggled with both consistency and fitness, led to him losing his spot in the starting rotation.

As the Blue Jays bolstered their starting rotation by signing Dylan Cease and Cody Ponce this offseason, Berrios was linked with a potential move away from the Rogers Centre.

According to MLB Network’s Jon Morosi, Berrios may win back a spot in the starting rotation in 2026 if he impresses in spring training.

Morosi explained his thoughts during Monday’s episode of “Hot Stove.”

“The Blue Jays have brought in Trey Yesavage since the middle part of last year, who was such a postseason star for the Jays. Then they signed Dylan Cease as well. At the moment, Chris Bassitt is still unsigned. The idea right now – Jose Berrios is ready to go for the start of spring training,” Morosi said (0:10).

“I was told this today, no restrictions on him from the standpoint of his health. The only question, of course, is will there be a rotation spot? If he has a solid beginning to spring, and is able to start the year healthy, I have to expect that he does have a claim on a rotation spot. Especially when you consider the Jays likely don’t have Yesavage pencilled in for 180-190 innings,” he added.

Insider Explains Why Trading Jose Berrios May Be Difficult For The Blue Jays

Appearing on Monday’s episode of “Toronto Sports Rush,” insider Keegan Matheson of MLB.com explained why trading Jose Berrios might not be a straightforward process for the Toronto Blue Jays.

“If the Blue Jays started the season now, how am I rolling up the rotation? Dylan Cease, Kevin Gausman, Shane Bieber, Trey Yesavage, Cody Ponce, probably. The issue is, all of the reasons that the Blue Jays might want to trade Jose Berrios are the same reasons another team might say no thanks,” Matheson said, during Monday’s episode of ‘Toronto Sports Rush’ (7:42).

“He is owed money; he has the option to opt into two more years. Now, if you’re trading for Berrios, you’re looking at those as dangers for your team and your payroll. So, the Blue Jays are in a spot where they would need to eat some of that salary,” he added.

Berrios finished the 2025 season with a 9-5 record, 4.17 ERA, and 138 strikeouts.
