“Stop Making Excuses” – Athletics’ Luis Severino Issues Blunt Challenge Ahead of Second Year in Sacramento

Athletics ace Luis Severino showed his frustration with the team’s performance last season. Despite starting the season on a solid note, the Athletics’ regular season derailed, leading to a 76-86 record and finishing fourth in the AL West.

It’s important to note that the Athletics played in a new ballpark last season following their exit from Oakland. After leaving the Oakland Coliseum, the Athletics relocated its home games to Sutter Health Park in West Sacramento, California, for 2025 as an interim home while a permanent new stadium is being built in Las Vegas.

Ahead of the 2026 season, Severino wants results rather than dwelling on excuses.

“Yeah, I think everybody is more comfortable. The pitchers had a year in Sacramento to figure out what we need to do. I think this year, we just need to stop making excuses, go out there and compete, and try to win more games.”

Severino started 29 games last season, posting an 8-11 record with a 4.54 ERA, 124 strikeouts and 1.30 WHIP. He was signed to the largest contract in the Athletics’ history, a three-year, $69 million deal.

Luis Severino On His Pitching Approach in Upcoming 2026 Season

Apart from a few rough months in 2026, the Athletics proved to be a contender for a postseason spot. Luis Severino’s performance will go a long way in making that happen in 2026.

In the ballpark at Sutter Health, Severino struggled, posting a 6.01 ERA. However, over his last four starts, he was able to reduce his ERA to 3.00.

Going into the 2026 season, Severino expressed confidence in the group, giving reason to believe that this upcoming season will be different from last year.

“The good thing is we have a great group of guys. Kurtz [won] Rookie of the Year, Sodey [Tyler Soderstrom] had a great season. Jacob Wilson too. For them, I think that’s not enough. They wanna go out there and give more. That’s the mentality that I like for our team,” Severino said on A’s Cast.

Severino’s comments reflect the Athletics are confident they can secure a postseason spot in 2026.
